What is FOCUS San Diego?

FOCUS is an acronym for Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve. FOCUS San Diego is a local chapter of FOCUS North America, a non-profit 501c3 domestic charitable provider organization headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. FOCUS North America is the only national Pan-Orthodox Christian agency working operationally on pervasive and persistent issues of poverty in our communities in conjunction with the Orthodox Church in North America. FOCUS San Diego is an outreach of the Orthodox Christian churches in San Diego.

Inspired by the Orthodox Christian tradition of championship of the poor and oppressed, FOCUS San Diego’s mission is to the under-served homeless and working poor with food, occupation help & counseling, clothing, emergency assistance (of various kinds), and help with housing (by way of referral to other providers). We will serve in conjunction with other providers, faith-based and secular.

Holy Icons at God's Extended Hand Mission

FOCUS San Diego has placed its first Holy Icon at God's Extended Hand Mission, in the Sanctuary-Dining Room where our FOCUS Dinners are served. Thanks to the generosity of Rev. Fr. Boulos Khoury, of St. John of Damascus Orthodox Christian Church, all who come to The Mission for a meal (or to serve) will be blessed by the presence of a beautiful Icon of Christ.

Fr. Boulos makes beautiful Icons, such as this one, by printing copies of original Icons on canvas and skillfully mounting them on wood. This is only the first of perhaps ten Icons that we hope to place at God's Extended Hand in the coming weeks and months, as a witness to our Orthodox Christian Faith and an aid to prayer and worship at The Mission.

The leadership team of FOCUS San Diego plans to encourage each local parish to donate money to FOCUS as a fund raising activity for God's Extended Hand. Fr. Boulos would then mount an Icon of the Patron Saint of that parish (at his own expense), to be displayed and used at God's Extended Hand.

Rev. Curtis Bernstein, Pastor of God's Extended Hand, recognizes the beauty and spiritual value of Holy Icons, and has welcomed us to cover the east wall of the Sanctuary-Dining Room with them. If you haven't yet had a chance to join us in preparing and serving one of our weekly Wednesday FOCUS Dinners, we would love to have you with us to serve, as well as to see our beautiful Icon of Christ!
